After helping form Ritzert & Leyton in 1994, Gerry has focused his efforts in the firm’s civil litigation, employment, and higher education practice areas. He protects clients in federal and state court litigation, and federal and state administrative hearings. Client controversies in which Gerry is routinely involved include litigation and administrative hearings involving the United States Department of Education, state attorneys general, state, and private accrediting bodies,
local human rights commissions, the EEOC, and state and federal wage and hour agencies including the United States Department of Labor. Gerry also defends and advises clients involved in employment, contract, or business-related controversies. He has primary responsibility at the firm for client controversies and compliance involving employment claims and policies and for clients seeking to ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws.
In addition to handling employment litigation matters, Gerry works with clients in drafting and implementing employment policies and procedures to ensure compliance and effectiveness. Gerry also drafts employment-related agreements (non-disclosure agreements, non-solicitation agreements, non-compete agreements, etc.) to protect client interests.
Along with others in the firm’s higher education law practice area, Gerry assesses client compliance efforts and assists them in achieving and maintaining regulatory compliance. He defends education clients in related administrative proceedings and federal court proceedings including claims made under the False Claims Act (FCA).
Gerry is involved in planning and conducting internal investigations for postsecondary education institutions, government contractors, and other business organizations. Gerry has primary responsibility for designing and managing the firm’s large data discovery activities, which includes the collection, analysis, and production of significant amounts of electronically stored information.
Gerry earned his law degree from the George Mason School of Law (now the Antonin Scalia Law School) as a night student in 1987. While attending law school, Gerry worked full-time at MCI in the then-emerging modern telecommunications industry. Prior to attending law school, he earned his undergraduate (finance) and graduate (MBA – finance) degrees from Virginia Tech.
With licenses to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland, Gerry provides representation in local courts and agencies as well as throughout the country where clients have needs.
